A Little Short on Cash?

By Michael Edwards

Try a few of these energy saving tips using new green products to put cash back in your pocket unless of course you are trying to do your part to keep your electric company's revenues up.

Install only compact fluorescent light bulbs

A Compact Fluorescent Lamp (or CFL) is a small circular fluorescent light bulb used to replace incandescent bulbs. They typically take the same amount of space as an old incandescent bulb, and screw right into the same socket.

CFLs produce light on a different principle than incandescent bulbs. When an incandescent bulb is turned on, current is sent through a wire filament. The filament heats up until it starts to glow, and the glow produces light. A CFL is a sealed tube of glass filled with argon gas. Mixed with the argon is some mercury vapor. When an electrical current is applied, an invisible ultraviolet light is generated. When the ultraviolet light hits the fluorescent coating (called phosphor) on the inside of the tube, visible light is emitted.

You have heard this before, but unless you are only going to turn on that incandescent bulb a couple of times a year, you are wasting money (no matter how cheap the bulb is). Green products help you save money. One of the new Energy Star compact fluorescent light bulbs (CFL) saves around 75% over an equivalent incandescent bulb. In one year, that could add up to a $30 savings - per bulb!

Since the development of CFLs, manufacturers have been working on a variety of shades, colors, or "temperatures" of light. Currently you can purchase bulbs that will produce light that is yellow, or warn, all the way to bulbs that produce a hard bluish white light. Used properly, this can accent a well designed room or be used for mood lighting. One area you might want to consider is the outside security lighting. I would not recommend a warm inviting mood light if it is being used as security device; perhaps an unfriendly harsh bluish mood would be better.

When using the Daylight or bluish bulbs be aware that their light appears harsh to many. People with light sensitivity could be adversely affected. If you notice them squinting or avoiding areas where this light is used, then try using a warmer light.

Look on the package for a number that ends in K. This stands for Kelvin or the "temperature" of the bulb. A Kelvin rating of 2700K-3000K is a warm/yellow bulb. A Cool White bulb has a rating of 3500K-4100K. A rating of 5000K-6500K is a Daylight blue bulb.

To replace a 40 watt incandescent bulb, use a 9-13 watt CFL bulb; for a 60 watt incandescent bulb use a 13-15 watt; for a 75 watt incandescent bulb use an 18-25 watt CFL; and for a 100 watt incandescent bulb, use a 23-30 watt CFL.

Nevertheless, do not forget to recycle all CFLs. California law for example forbids the disposal of any lamps containing mercury in the regular solid waste trash. Even though a CFL is one of the most convenient green products, it does contain about five milligrams of mercury - one-fifth of the amount of mercury in an average watch battery.

Many retailers in your area like ACE Hardware, Home Depot and Orchard have recycling programs that will accept your used CFL green products.

An even newer and more efficient green product for lighting is LED (light emitting diode) bulbs. They are up to 90% more efficient than a standard incandescent bulb. You will see them used more and more in decorative lighting systems. I am told that the electricity needed to light a single incandescent used a few years ago for lawn lighting could power 15 LED units.

We will look at more green products that help you reduce your energy bill next time.

Homemade Renewable Energy - Is It Possible?

By Peter Sharnoff

Whether we like it or not, energy crisis is here and is here to stay. Reason? Our overly dependence on non-renewable energy sources, namely fossil fuels. Non-renewable sources are, of course, limited. It is estimated that fossil fuels will run out in a few decades. What happens then?

We will have to find alternative energy resources and we should start looking today. Renewable sources of energy are, of course, the answer. As the name suggests they are renewable, meaning available in unlimited supply. Solar and wind energy, for example.

Solar and wind energy are two of the most abundant energy sources available on our planet. They are clean, nonpolluting, available almost anywhere, and what is very important - free.

These options are particularly practical for homeowners. People don't know how easy and cheap it is nowadays to make your own electricity at home. Costly grid electricity, that is made mostly from coal, can be quite easily replaced by much cheaper renewable energy sources.

How much can you save by making your own electricity? It's easy to reduce your power bill by up to 80%. If you are really up to it, you can eliminate it completely and live happily ever after off the grid. Wouldn't it be great to have free electricity?

One of the main reasons why people still don't use renewable energy sources as much as they should is the cost of the equipment. Granted, pre-made solar and wind power systems for households are not cheap, but as always, there are alternatives. Believe it or not, it's not that difficult to do it yourself.

All you need are some easy step-by-step plans and a bit of D-I-Y effort. For less than $200 you can build your own solar and wind power system and enjoy practically free electricity. Plus, you'll be doing your part in saving the environment.

Using Solar Power At Home.

By Simon Berrit

The sun shines brightly in the sky providing warmth for the earth. It is also this warmth that we can use to provide energy that is cheap and renewable.

Now, the good news is that this is not too difficult anymore. Pretty much anyone can get involved, whether they are technical whizzes or not.

Of course there are a few prerequisites, like the need to have a roof or some place to put a panel that can easily gather sunlight. Following this you will need to have a very good quality instruction manual to work with.

There are plenty about, we personally recommend Earth4Energy as our number 1 choice.

Once you have secured the instruction manual then you will have all the information that you need to know to get the job done. Much of the equipment is easily available and you may even have some of it lying around at home.

All of the other equipment that is written on the needed list can be bought from a local neighborhood hardware store. The instructions that you will use to build are all easy to understand with full explanations for anything technical.

If you find yourself in trouble then companies like Earth4Energy have a support team that will get you back on the right track again.

The end of the process involves getting the batteries connected to the whole system which will allow you to store the power once you are collecting the sunlight. This is of course absolutely vital to the whole process and you will not be able to store your energy with out doing this. If you like you can stop after one panel or continue to build more and more and even get involved in wind turbines and renewable wind energy.

Contingency Plan For The Cheaper Fuel Bills In The Future

By Philip Youngwood

UK households and business are going to have to look at reducing their energy out put as the Government begins to unveil its carbon reduction targets. So now could be the best time to make contingency plans for cheaper gas and electric bills, according to a leading price comparison website.

There are a range of shops that cater for low energy appliances and accessories in stores such as B&Q and even supermarkets have a fantastic range of energy saving devices. The price comparison site has also offered a number of tips to homeowners aimed at helping them keep their energy costs to a minimum.

These include only boiling the required amount of water in a kettle, reducing the use of electrical and gas appliances, by switching off lights and gadgets when not in use and not to leave them on standby.

Even something as simple as reducing the temperature on your washing machine from 40C to 30C can help cut your energy consumption.

The group adds that "That for around 45 to 150 pounds, you might also like to consider fitting your home with an energy monitoring gadget. These can be a bit pricey but allow families to see their rising bills in real time - and bring down use accordingly". Thusly this will allow you to recoup the price of the energy meter.

It goes on to advise about buying efficiently - such as replacing an old gas boiler with an energy efficient model. Now maybe also a good time to replace that aging fridge freezer or washing machine. With a lot of appliances a lot more energy efficient than there predecessors this could lead to a long term saving.

However, there have been concerns that for renewable energy plants to be developed, it could cause utility costs to rise now to cover the cost of future renewable energy sources such as wind farms and solar energy collection. With this in mind it could spell the end of cheap gas and electricity offers as companies try to recoup their investment.

Solar Power Homes: 3 Factors To Consider First

By Ryse Edwards

Have you ever thought about using solar power for your home, but you were not quite sure if it was a good idea or not? Well, the simple way to determine if using solar power at home is right for you is by doing your due diligence first. There is no doubt that solar power is helping people save money each month, and it can help you too, but there are three important factors that you should think about first.

Here are the 3 factors that you must consider if you plan on using solar power for homes:

Factor 1: Sure, solar power is powerful enough to power any home, but the weather where your home is located is still going to play a big role in your savings. before you install any solar panels, you must first ask yourself a few basic questions like... Do you get good year round sun? Does your property get good sunlight or is it blocked by trees?

These are all important things to ask yourself because they will all play a role in the amount of savings that you see. Solar power homes require a lot of sunlight year if you want it to be worth your time and effort. Solar panels will still provide your home with some power through the elements of trees, rain and clouds but it won't be as good as it could be. Homes that are in very sunny regions like Las Vegas will really see a great amount of energy and money savings if they use solar power for their home.

Factor 2: Locating a spot to install your solar panels is a very important step. You must make sure that you find the spot with the most amount of sunlight each day. You may think that one spot looks good because it is sunny there during the afternoon, but then during the morning and evening it is covered in shade. Be careful where you place them and loo for maximum sunlight for the duration of the day.

Factor 3: make sure that you hook up your solar panels to the electricity grid correctly. If you don't hook it up correctly then you may be waiting a long time wondering why you are not gaining any power. You must take the time to research how to set up solar panels so that they run properly, or hire someone that knows how to do it for you.

These are the 3 factors that you have to know about before you decide to use solar power for homes. Now that you know about these factors, you can make an informed decision about whether solar power is the right way for you to go. Research and learn as much as you can before you make your final decision.

Wind turbines and the effects on your home

By John Ashbury

Although anyone can decide to install a wind powered system in there home there are some things that should be considered beforehand. Most people have questions about the system and this article will attempt to answer some of those questions.

Anyone can install a wind turbine system in their home. There are federal regulations set forth that require electricity companies to connect to wind turbine systems. If you want to install a wind turbine system in your home then talk to your electricity company. They are required to work with you and connect the turbine system. The best thing that you can do is contact the manufacturer of the wind turbine system . They should be able to work with the utility company to get the proper approvals and be sure the system you install is up to code.

Many prospective prospective owners are concerned about the wiring in their homes and fear that in order to install the system they will need to interfere with their existing wiring. But this is not the case. Wind turbine systems do not affect the wiring in your home in the least and are simply fitted to your home.

When you have decided to go ahead and have a wind powered system installed in your home the electricity company will then install an additional meter next to your regular electricity meter. This new one will measure the amount of energy that the electricity company is buying from your turbine.

In order for you to install a wind turbine for your home you will require a tower. It will need to be between eighty and one-hundred-and-twenty feet tall and is usually supplied along with the wind turbine when you purchase it. The reason that you need a tower in the first place is because wind does not tend to blow very strongly close to the ground. By installing the system on the tower it is able to store more energy from the stronger wind that blows higher up.

There are many different types of towers that you can use when you install a wind alternative energy source at your home. There are different types of towers and they all have different advantages. The guyed lattice tower is known as the best tower to use because it is so economical. The hinged tower is favored by many people because of the ease of installation and it also provides easier access for maintenance purposes.

There are many questions that people have about alternative electricity systems created by wind. Many people think that wind powered systems require changes of the wiring in the home and other things. When you install a wind energy system into your home you don't have to change any of the wiring in the home.

Also, remember that you will need to have a tower installed as well and this is usually provided along with the system. For your energy needs and for the turbine to be most effective the tower will have to be fairly tall so that the system is not close to the ground. Anyone can install a wind turbine provided that you work with your electricity supplier to do it the right way.

Be A Green Pioneer

By Kris Janowich

Summer is a wonderful time that everyone loves and they also love their air conditioners that keep them cool. One thing people are not so fond of are the expensive electric bills that are certain to follow. Every home uses electricity to some extent and due to circumstances beyond a homeowner's control the prices for that electric tend to fluctuate. Nevertheless, there is another way to power your home that does not leave you vulnerable to the local utility. Solar power is becoming more and more prevalent and kits are available for any home.

These kits include the basic items you will need to install a solar panel. Consisting primarily of a manual, nuts, bolts, and the panels themselves these are the basic starting kits. If you also need a battery station then you?ll have to buy that separately. Unless you know a good dealer that's selling everything in one kit, it's not impossible to find but it can be difficult.

Solar power has been used in many forms for a long time and still the first solar panel systems were ridiculed. Of course, the systems were gigantic, unwieldy and susceptible to damage not to mention the fact that they were extremely expensive. Thankfully though interest increased and so did the technology until solar power systems became practical. Today you can find outdoor lamps that are completely powered by tiny solar panels.

The way solar power works for homes and other applications is by a process called the photoelectric effect. This effect converts sunlight into electricity via a photoelectric cell. This is the standard type of cell seen on homes and other businesses. They are also used on satellites and the international space station, although those are much more advanced. The old models were delicate but the newer ones are quite durable.

The idea is you cover your roof with these panels and the daily sunlight gets converted into electricity for you to use. You can power a whole house via this method and many people are going off the power grids and supplying their own energy. The panels made for use on buildings and homes are very durable, and resistant to weather factors. The panels are designed to last for 20 years or more. Plus the electricity they provide is completely renewable and clean.

But for times when the sun isn't shining, like at night or during a thunderstorm you need a battery station. This may be installed in your basement and will charge itself to capacity when there is sunlight available. When there is little or no light and you need electricity the battery station switches on and provides you with energy. The amount depends on the size, type, and capacity of the battery.

Solar power is becoming more popular every day. As our dependency on oil is proving to be unsafe and unreliable many people are taking matters into their own hands. Many are getting behind the idea of solar farms for their towns and cities. This is a very practical source of electricity. The earth receives enough of it that we could power the entire world with it and the plants wouldn't be everywhere.

Solar power seems to be on the horizon but many are not accepting it. Mainly because people who earn a living with coal and oil don't want to see that future. They love their jobs more than they love their society, and that is sad.

Solar Lights: Why TheBig Purchases This Year?

By Phineas Duru

Lot's of people these days are using solar lights rather than regular lights to illuminate their homes. Not just on the interior of their homes but on the outside as well. These small pieces of equipment are starting to pop up everywhere and they are no longer bulky or ugly looking. This is good considering the flock of buyers these days.

What is Solar light? Solar lights are solar powered lights. Whether they choose to use traditional bulbs, led's, or another form of illumination is up to the designer. Technological advancement these days have gotten to the point where they are very small, sometimes no bigger than a large coffee cup. Yes! not the bulb, the entire unit itself. Anyways, with the small compact size prices have dropped as well.

To exlain, a standard solar light will of course have the light, usually enclosed in a white or clear plastic, or glass dome. In designing the unit, usually on top of the unit there will be a solar panel, you want this facing the sun. The run time on these varies by the charge they are able to accumulate during the day and of course relative to their position to the sun rays. Typically, a solar light will last for 5 hours on a decent charge, some can even last 7. Be rest assured that there's also no danger of an electrical fire with a solar light.

A great number of people are buying these lights this summer for numerous reasons. Solar lights do not ever use power from the grid making it a cost free way to light your gardens, pathways and lawns. They also are rather convenient and can be placed almost anywhere provided there's sunlight shinning through. Aside from this, the fact that they don't drain power from the grid means there's more power to go around for things like air conditioning. Not deprived use of our electrical gadgets due to cost of electricity is very important during the summer months especially for those of us who have health issues.

Consider more compelling reason for their growing popularity; They've become more attractive; they're no longer a geeky and bulky ugly thing that sticks out in your yard and proclaims that you're an Environmentalist. They add style and shapeness to landscaping and can be used to light walkways at the same time. They're gracefully compact and can work well with decks, porches and patios.

If you like creativity, then you are in for a treat with solar lights. Due to their variety, flexibility and utility, they've inspired a lot of creative light displays and setups. They can be used to highlight a garden for night parties, marking walk ways. They have also done well as security devices when hooked up to a motion sensor.

Understandably, due to the collapse of the housing market, a lot of home owners are trying home improvement on smaller budgets. Do you know that Solar lights are a great way to do this? They're affordable, and they provide a solid improvement on the home, while making the garden pleasanter in the evening. Their lack of long term costs since they do not draw from the electricity grid gives them a good return on the money spent to buy them. They may not actively reduce your electric bill, but they won't increase it.

The bottom line- solar lights are a great way to save lots of money. They are small, cheap, and efficient. They also do not take up a lot of space and are easily put up and maintained. Plus, they look pretty nice with the proper complimentary backgrounds.

Wind Power Systems For The Energy Conscious Home Owner

By Denzil De Vries

Adding a source of alternative energy to your family's energy solutions is good for the environment, your wallet and makes a statement of your commitment to environmental progress. Wind power systems can cut your power bill and create awareness in your community.

Wind power systems work on a grid much like a solar power system. Most wind power systems will run either on the grid or off the grid. If you run on the grid you have the option of using power from the power company if and when your supply runs low. The added benefit of this is the option to sell power back to the power company when they run low and have to supply their customers.

Off the grid wind power systems generally cost more upfront and require additional sources of alternative power. Once fully implemented, though, the energy cost savings are considerable. The components of an off the grid system are slightly different than those of an on grid system. Off the grid systems generally work best for rural and undeveloped areas. Farmlands and valley towns do well with wind generating electricity. For a home wind power system, you might want an couple of other power supplies like a diesel generator or solar panels.

There will be a wind turbine wired to a control box that conducts the charging of a large bank of deep cycle batteries. An inverter will pull the electricity from the batteries and covert it to household electricity. Miscellaneous devices like breakers, lighting arrestors and fuses will be needed as well.

For most modern households, an on grid system is the way to go. Wind turbines will take a place in landscape design and aesthetics will be an added benefit of alternative energy production through wind turbines. The added benefit of tax breaks and rebate incentives will guide this trend.

To get an idea of what type of rebates and programs are available in your area visit your local government website. Also call your current power provider and ask for educational references on alternative power for homeowners.

Think about the areas around you that already incorporate wind turbines for energy production. Talk to people who use domestic small wind power systems. Another easy place to start is with an alternative energy contractor. Many contractors will offer free consultations, especially in a down economy.

Realize How To Utilize Renewable Energy During This Energy Crisis

By Gary Greenman

Most individuals are more than a little aware of the electricity crisis that we`re facing at the moment. The thought of wind and solar energy has surely been around for a long time and some individuals have even made use of it on a quite small scale. However, it might just be time to start thinking big with these alternative forms of electrcity.

Turning to Alternative Energy Sources

Even if we carry on to use fossil fuels, there are so many downsides to this. Even as it`s anticipated that we still have some time left on the existing fuels, they will ultimately run out. They are a finite resource that we`ll certainly use up. At the moment, we are accessing the easiest sources, but soon, more work will be needed to get to the other areas that can provide us with this type of fuel.

In addition, fossil fuels are a major issue in the present state of the ecosystem. Whether or not you believe in global warming, there is absolutely an effect on the planet from the huge amount of pollutants being created by power consumption around the planet.

There is also the economic factor to consider. Everyone was recently taken aback with just how high gas prices went around the globe. While they have stabilized a little, the cost of power can only go up as fossil fuels become scarcer. All this leads to the perks of wind and solar power, both outstanding renewable electricity sources that could well end the power crisis.

Why Wind AND Solar Power?

Quite simply, it`s pretty hard to get the amount of electrcity needed from just one type of collector. For instance, if we use only solar panels . . . what happens when we have an extended cloudy period? And likewise, if using only wind, what happens when it dies down? It`s forever good to have backup systems in place and wind and solar energy work very well together.

At the moment, wind power in the United States offers enough electricity to energy approximately 2 million homes. Studies have shown that it`s more than possible to provide for the energy needs of the entire nation using just wind electrcity, which is also the most efficient and easily used alternative energy source.

Solar energy is very useful, but it is also still fairly costly to install solar panels. While this will likely drop as the exploration and technology get better, for the moment, it`s cost prohibitive (and space prohibitive!) to use solar panels to provide the entire nation with electricity. However, many areas are doing very well with solar power, mainly those in the sunnier parts of the country and with the combination of solar and wind, you can see that there is an renewable to the petroleum products at present being used.

Harnessing the Power

More and more people are opting to add solar panels to their houses, saving on electricity bills and lowering their overall electricity consumption rate. However, in order to really generate a dent in the power crisis, we`ll need more than just individuals working on the problem. With cooperation, it`s probable for entire towns and even cities to run completely on alternative electrcity sources, like those we`ve been discussing here. Visualize the impact this could have on the environment, as well as our everyday lives.

Solar and wind power are the future of energy sources. Together, they provide the chance that we need to escape from the ever rising cost of fossil fuels and give us a cleaner, safer and less expensive energy.

Renewable Energy-What Are The Two Best Renewable Energy Sources

By Michael Keneto

Using renewable energy is something that many people are starting to become more and more interested in. The reasons are clear -- we absolutely cannot rely on fossil fuels for the world's energy much longer! Not only are they becoming more expensive, they're also damaging to the earth in more ways than one.

Many people cannot afford the oil prices these days. It doesn't matter whether you are in one of the poorest countries in the world, or in one of the most affluent -- people are having trouble paying for fossil fuels. That's not even to mention the fact that the methods of getting these fossil fuels can be quite damaging to the earth, and to the workers who get the fuel. Once the fuel is used, it can sometimes be damaging to the environment.

Fossil fuels are becoming so harmful to the world, in fact, that there are wars being fought over them. People are needlessly giving up their lives in order to provide these fossil fuels for the world's energy. Unfortunately, there is no clear way to stop this problem except for finding different sources of energy.

There are two renewable sources of energy that are your best bets these days. It's actually not as difficult to implement as many people believe it to be -- these sources of energy renew time and time again. We are talking about the sun, and the wind! The sun is the most frequently thought of source, and solar energy panels are even favored in some products that may be acquired today.

The sun comes out reliably each morning, and it can be a good way to assemble energy for your complete home, or for travel. If you live in a windy area, you can definitely employ the wind in order to provide energy. This energy may also be used to power the electricity in your house. While many folks are tickled about these replenish-able sources of energy, it's shocking that more folks have not hopped on board. Fortunately, with the introduction of certain products that make it straightforward to start making solar energy panels and wind energy generators, the movement to make less expensive, better, energy for power is fast catching on

Make it your mission to become a part of this movement so you can live "off the grid." the price of getting started with sun or wind power is minute compared to what many of us are paying for their monthly energy bills! It's time to do something, and use replaceable power sources instead.

Benefits of Green Energy Sources

By Carl Ziebarth

Fossil fuels have long been crucial to American society. We use fossil fuels to heat our homes, run our cars, and create our electricity. America's appetite for fossil fuels is increasing dramatically. Consequences of our fossil fuel habit is depleting our resources and killing the planet.

Green energy sources are not a cure but they will help. Green energy sources offer many advantages. Advantages that we will not get without changing our habits. Some argue that green energy is too hard to generate. True as that might be, there are many different types of green energy sources. We just have to identify those that are viable, according to geographic location.

There are various green energy sources available such as solar, wind, wave, hydropower, and geothermal. These energy sources do not produce harmful by products or harm the environment. Results that are a 360 degrees difference from fossil fuels.

Fossil fuels release harmful carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. Individually, a coal plant may not produce a large amount of carbon dioxide. Our world currently has 50,000 coal plants. Cumulatively, that is an enormous amount of carbon dioxide. We must reverse this trend before it is too later. We must cultivate sources of green energy.

Nuclear power appears to be a viable solution. Nuclear power produces the necessary energy. Nuclear power brings with it it's own set of issues. While producing energy, nuclear power produces spent fuel rods. These rods have to go somewhere. How many mountains or holes can we fill with spent fuel rods? Then there are nuclear accidents. True, there has not been one for years. Do you want to be your children's lives there will never be another one?

Every fuel source requires maintenance, including green energy. All energy production sources have maintenance costs. Ethanol production still requires corn to be refined at a refinery. Windmills are mechanical machines. They have parts that must be maintained. Even with these maintenance costs, green energy is still more attractive than fossil fuels.

Green sources have one advantage that fossil fuels cannot compete with. Green energy is renewable. We will NEVER run out of green energy. Sun's rays have hit the earth for millions of years. These rays have produced wind for millions of years. Utilizing green energy sources reduces America's dependence on fossil fuels.

Governments are only talking about replacing fossil fuels. They hold global climate change summits. They pass resolutions. They even tell us that we need to drive less and reduce our energy usage. Without viable alternatives, it is difficult to do. It is time that we realize we have viable alternatives. We have green energy.

It is easy to talk about how concerned we are about the environment but you have to ask yourself when will more solar panels or wind turbines will be erected? When will the number of coal or nuclear power plants be reduced?

Green energy sources is the solution to the environmental, political and social problems of this lifetime. By spending more on these technologies, no country will have to depend on another or even a corporation for their power needs because they are self dependent and free.

Myths Spread about Hybrid Vehicles

By Colin Jones

If you are considering a hybrid vehicle, you may be hearing quite a bit of "talk". Some people think the hybrid car is the best thing since sliced bread. Other people say it'll just pass. Yet other people again say they think they can save a lot of money, but you're not sure it's really worth it. What is the truth, and how do you separate fact from fiction with all of the stuff that is being said to you? Below, you can read and consider the common hybrid vehicle myths.

Hybrid cars are just the same as electric cars: This is untrue because hybrid cars are fuel-powered for the most part. But they have what are called 'battery assists'. The assist is powered by a nickel-metal hydride battery pack that is rechargeable.

You are guaranteed to save money with a hybrid vehicle: If you are doing town driving, you may save gas and you may not. The same goes for highway driving. There are just too many different factors involved. It has been said that if everyone bought hybrid vehicles, the gas consumption would drop by just 10%. That's not a very big decline, is it?

A hybrid vehicle's battery can run out: A hybrid car's battery should not run flat when you are actually driving it. The engine of a hybrid vehicle does not idle when stopped (at a red traffic light for example). What does it do then? Well, it recharges its battery. So there is no need to worry about a hybrid vehicle stopping on that score.

A hybrid car's rechargeable battery only lasts for 2 years: A hybrid car definitely would not be worth purchasing if this was the case. A hybrid car's rechargeable batteries usually come with an eight-year guaranty.

If I run out of fuel, I can keep driving on the hybrid car battery: Bear in mind that, a hybrid's battery is an assist. That means that hybrid vehicles still run on fuel. After you run out of gas, the battery may keep the car running for a little while. However, the car will cease running very soon.

Hybrid cars will soon put normal car sellers out of business: I'm sure that this won't take place very soon. The reason for the delay has to do with the how much hybrids cost. Most people simply can't afford one. Furthermore, people just aren't sure whether they will really save money by buying a hybrid car. Therefore, they are loathe to join the rush of people who want to own a hybrid vehicle.

Hybrid cars will only save you about 88USD per annum: I did hear something on the news the other day, but it may be untrue. If there's something you really want and there's a lot of gossip surrounding it, you simply have got to start digging around and do some research yourself. There are many different types of hybrid vehicle, and many different manufacturers make them. This means that there may be much more involved than we have discussed here. A hybrid car may help you, and it may not, but the final decision is up to you.

So, don't worry too much about what people say. Do your own research and make up your own mind. Use the Internet to get information. The manufacturer's advertising is also useful, if you stick to reading the facts and gloss over the hype. Check that what the literature claims is also in the guarantee.

Factors that will influence the output of your wind turbine

By John Ashbury

Wind turbines are dependent upon a number of different influences that will determine how much energy is created and stored. You will need to bear these things in mind if you are considering using this form of alternative energy for your home or business. Solar systems also have differences and that can make wind a better alternative.

The average wind speed is a factor that is a big influence on how much electricity that can be produced from a wind turbine. The more wind speed that you have then the higher the production of electricity will be. This means two things.

You will need to take into account the amount of wind that you receive where you live. If you receive lots of wind and often that wind is strong, you will know that using a wind powered system, or wind turbine, would be the smart choice for your energy needs. However, if you live in an area that does not experience much wind then you will not be able to generate much energy from the wind turbine.

The diameter of the rotor has a lot to do with the output of the electricity that you get from a wind turbine also. The bigger the diameter is of the rotor then the more output you have of electricity also. You need to consider a good sized rotor. Cost may be a factor but you are defeating the purpose if you go for the cheaper solution of a smaller rotor. In order to get the most energy you need to get a bigger rotor.

Your system will need to off the ground, because a system that is close to the ground might not be able to collect strong wind in order to be converted into the energy that you need. Therefore you will need to have a tower for the system. This will keep it high enough so that it will be able to collect the strong gusts of wind to change into energy. A wind that is around ten miles per hour is not going to be of much use at all. But the higher the tower, the more energy will ultimately be produced.

Although you might be considering choosing to use solar power you need to remember that those systems are dependent upon the sun. If you live in a place where there are not many days of sunshine per year that system will not be the choice you should make. Even if you do experience enough sunshine, other factors can still prevent the system from working adequately, such as clouds, rain, snow and even debris. Also, most solar systems have panels which require electricity in order to operate.

A wind turbine does not require anything but the wind in the air. There isn't anything stopping the wind unless you live in a pocket or right up against a mountain and are blocked.

Many factors influence the amount of electricity that wind turbines generate and store within the system. Most of the time the system actually relies on these factors in order to put out the most energy possible. If you can meet these factors, IE, the height and size, then you can expect to have a system that will supply your energy needs in a very cost effective, environment friendly way.

Buying A Hybrid Car to Save on Gas

By Colin Jones

As you drive up to the fuel station pump and fill your car up with $10-$40 worth of gas, you may find yourself releasing a huge out sigh. How on Earth did gas become so expensive? Should you check out one of those new hybrid cars you saw on the TV? Everyone's talking about hybrid cars anyway. Hybrid cars and other types of cars may seem to be a good idea, but before you go out and do something rash, maybe you should ask yourself some basic questions about how you can start to save on petrol.

There are so many options out there including everything from staying home to buying a hybrid car, but you have to find out what is best for you. You can only do that by posing yourself the following questions.

Perhaps you should drive less often?

Of course, you could spend the rest of your life in the house on the couch, but how would you eat then? I know what you're thinking you will walk more and get more exercise. That may be true, but what happens when you get bored with walking and riding your bike? How are you going to be able to get to the gym? And, have you forgotten about work? You know you love listening to your books on tape while you sit in traffic at the end of the workday. Should you drive less? Perhaps not then. But what should you do? Well, have you ever considered buying a hybrid vehicle?

Should I buy a car that is more economical on gas?

Yes, you could do this, but what about when the vehicle starts to depreciate with age and it becomes less fuel-efficient than you thought it would be? Moreover, subconsciously, because you know you have a car that gets more mileage out of petrol, you are going to start travelling more miles than you traveled before.

Should I get up earlier each morning to look for the cheapest gas prices in town?

Come on, who has the time for all that? If you really think about it, you would probably spend your time more profitably finding the right answer to the real question. Do you really want to spend extra time looking for a cheap petrol station? What would your boss think if you arrive late for work and tell him you were trying to save money on fuel? And anyway, how long do you honestly think you'll keep doing that?

Should I find a way to run my car on electric batteries?

Let's see, you certainly don't want to have to charge your car's batteries every day before going to work because that might make you late as well. However, with a hybrid car, you wouldn't have to worry about that. So, the next question should be obvious.

How about buying a hybrid car?

Perhaps you should. It's possible that buying a hybrid car would be a sensible way to avoid higher fuel prices. Would your car depreciate as soon as you drive it off the forecourt? A hybrid won't do that so quickly as it brings the buyer in more and more money as they save on petrol. A hybrid car really might be a good solution here. However, it's still a good idea to conduct further research before buying a hybrid car.

3 Factors To Think About With Solar Power Homes

By Ryse Edwards

Have you been considering using solar power for homes, but are not sure if this is a good idea? The best way to determine if this is what you want to do is to research and learn all you can about it. Solar power can definitely help you save money on your bills every month, but there are 3 important factors that you need to know about before you decide to use this for your home.

Here are the 3 factors that you must consider if you plan on using solar power for homes:

Factor 1: There is no doubt that solar power is powerful enough for any home, but before you install solar panels, you need to consider the weather you live in. In other words, is it sunny for most of the year? Do you deal with a lot of rain or clouds where you live? Is your yard filled with a lot of trees?

These are all important questions to answer because solar power for homes means that you need to have a lot of sun in order to have them work efficiently for you. Trees, rain, and clouds will prevent them from working like they should; it will still work to give your home power, but not as well as it could and it could end up costing you a lot of money. Any home that is very sunny areas will get the most benefits from solar power. For example, if you live in the desert, then you will get the most benefits from this.

Factor 2: Figuring out where to place the solar panels is also vital. You have to make sure that you install the solar panels in the area that receives the most sunlight. If you place it in a shady area, then you will not be getting the full energy from the solar power. So, figuring out where to place the panels is vital to getting the most benefits from it and for saving money; otherwise, you can lose money from using this power for your home.

Factor 3: You have to make sure you hook up the solar panels correctly to the electricity grids. If you don't, then you will not get any of the benefits from the solar power for homes. You have to take the time to research and learn where to properly install the solar panels so that you get the most solar power possible. If you don't know how to do it yourself, or you don't want to learn, then you can always find someone to do it for you.

These are the three factors that you should know about before you decide to use solar power for your home. Now that you know about these factors, you can make an informed decision about whether solar power is the right way for you to go.

The Advantages Of A Solar Home

By Tariq Ajram

When driving through a neighborhood, have you ever seen any houses with a large number of tall tinted windows? There is a good explanation, because of such windows, the people living in those homes are saving a good deal of money on their energy bills each month. How is this?-you ask. More simple than you might think. These homeowners have invested in home solar panel kits. With very little work your home could be built to make homemade energy using solar power. This would in turn save your family money by eliminating your monthly electric bill.

Here are some good tips you might consider when starting your home to be powered by solar energy. Which side of the house you locate most of the windows on is determined partly by what part of the country you live in. It is usually safe to say that in most parts of the country the sun will rise toward the south side of your home. This being said, you would need to put most of your windows in the south side of your home. This allows the sun to flow through and warm your home naturally. It is also important to make sure no trees are close to the south side of the house which would block much of the suns rays.

Adding a home solar panel kit when building your home, works by collecting heat from the sun then converting it into usable energy for powering your home and heating your water. The cost for setting up solar power may be more than that of a conventional home, but your savings over the years can not be measured. You will not only save money for your family but you will also be part of saving the environment. The cost of electricity has dramatically increased the past few years while solar photovoltaic products have become more affordable. Spending the initial investment on building a solar powered home makes more sense now than ever before.

Some simple steps to effectively use solar power to heat and cool your home:

1.) A simple way to reduce the time you use your air conditioner is to install ceiling fans.

2.) Ceiling fans also distribute the amount of heat and air more evenly so you do not have hot and cold pockets throughout your home.

3.) Insulated metal doors can be used to repel the cold and retain more heat.

4.) You can retain most of the heat inside your home if you will keep the doors shut during the time of day the sun is shining brightest on that side of the house.

Along with converting your home to solar power comes peace of mind from not worrying about the increase in the cost of gas and electricity. The benefits of building a solar home are not purely economic, it also means you are using the power of the sun therefore preserving our natural resources. By relying on renewable solar energy to heat your home and the numerous other functions it performs, it allows you to do away with your monthly energy bill. Wind Turbine Electricity Primer For The Inqusitive

By Denzil De Vries

Wind is fast becoming a popular alternative to producing electricity. There are wind farms coming up everywhere in the world these days. This powerful resource needs to be used as much as possible by individuals and companies. Wind turbine electricity is efficient and cost effective.

The wind turbine electricity is created only by wind resources. Wind is really a type of solar power. Just like solar panels use the sun, turbines use the wind, both natural sources of power. Here is an explanation of how it all works; the sun heats surfaces at uneven rates, the hot air that is formed then rises up and this forces cooler air to rush in and fill the gap. The rushing of the wind is what helps to produce the electricity. A wind turbine has to be positioned in the right area in order to catch the wind.

Blades are one of the most important pieces of the equation. Today turbines use blades that are horizontal, and there are usually only three blades. The metal cannot handle more than that as it is too much stress. The blades are made of a lightweight sturdy plastic or fiberglass, they are concave, and somewhat off center for a better angle for catching the wind and spinning the blades efficiently.

The blades are attached to a dual rotor assembly, which then attaches to a magnet rotor through a pulley assembly, which is used on larger turbines or can be placed directly on the smaller turbines that are used for homes. This assembly is what makes the blades spin when wind hits the blades.

The magnet rotor does not turn anything. It spins around a magnetic alternator which generates a magnetic field. When the magnetic field passes over the wires of the alternator, an electrical charge is generated. The electrical charge that is created is moved into a regulator that changes the natural electricity into a usable DC power form.

Now you have had a crash course in how a wind turbine works, you can imagine the potential. As you see it is a bit more complicated than one might first realize. It is however quite simple at its core. Harnessing the wind for energy use has been around for a long time. In days past it was used to turn wheels for different types of uses such as running a saw at a saw mill.

These days it may sound more sophisticated, but the premise is basically the same. There is a bit more math involved and more sophisticated components used to make it capture the wind to make electricity. The turbines do not resemble the old windmills of the past, but they do work more efficiently

How To Select The Best Generator For Your Home

By Riche Goldmann

We live in an age of energy consciousness, where people desire to be kinder to our environment. People also want to cut back on energy costs and expenditures. Getting a home generator can really help with this and can provide a significant source of energy. Generators are also a big help during serious weather conditions when power outages can be severe and long lasting. A home generator can provide a home with electricity. Therefore, it is critical to purchase the right one for your house, which can be easy with the help of the following tips.

The first important step that you must take is to decide what basic kind of generator you are going to need. They now come in two basic types: stationary and portable. You should have guessed that the stationary one means that you cannot move it and is better used as a backup energy source; portable generators are better suited for situations where a person will use it more on a regular and frequent basis both in and outside of the house. Either way, it is important to really think about this before pulling out any cash; a generator is a major purchase that should be made carefully.

After you determine your basic needs, you need to determine the specs that you will need in a generator, primarily the volume of voltage and watts you need your generator to have. You do not want to purchase a generator that cannot service your energy needs, but you also do not want to purchase one that does more than you need it to do because it is going to cost you. The best thing to do is to determine what items you are going to run on the generator, or if you are going to run your whole house, you can look at an energy bill and determine how much you use. You can also add up the watts and voltage of everything in your house that is currently plugged in or running on your energy. Then purchase a generator that has enough power to provide the service that you need.

It is also important to pick a generator that uses the type of fuel you are comfortable with. Most home generators will run on propane or natural gas. There are generators that will run on diesel fuel but these will mainly be larger and for more industrial use than for the home. However, some homeowners will prefer the larger model as it may suit their individual needs.

Lastly, you should concern yourself with any and all safety features that are available on a generator. These can be very important, as generators can be hazardous if not taken care of. You should always be as cautious as possible with any power source. In addition, make sure that you consider safety features that are going to be important to meeting your specific needs.

Save The Planet - Do It Yourself Solar Power

By Alexis Jameson

Most people think of highly intelligent scientists when solar power is mentioned as a method of energy for a home. This is the biggest misconception made by the population. There are many do it yourself solar power resources that can help you install solar power in your home. Solar power is a great deal cheaper in the long run that typical power coming from an electric company.

The basics that need introduced includes electricity flowing on a dc output. Simply stated, this type of energy is produced using a dc power output, or battery. The battery only operates as a generator when it is night time. This will ensure energy in the home at night. Another benefit is constant hot water. There are two types of energy being used with solar power. Alternating current also known as ac is the type of electric that passes through lines on a pole. Dc is the type of current that is produced by solar power and fed back onto the ac lines.

The batteries should be 12 volt. Marina batteries work the best. These are otherwise known as the batteries that operate boats. Once these are purchased, you must find an inverter that is sized to suit your energy needs. Then you will need a different type of meter installed in place of the original meter that only runs one direction. The purpose of the reversing meter is to push excessive energy back into the electric lines that were bringing power into your home.

The next step is wiring the energy harnessing panel to the power unit that distributes energy inside the home. Power units consist of 12 Volt batteries attached by romex cable to one inverter, and two panel boxes. One panel box is for ac power, and the other for dc power. Next, you will have to purchase a unique meter that reads incoming current and outgoing current. The current that is not needed to energize the home, will return to the ac power lines. This current will be read via the unique meter, and you will receive a check from your electric company for the power created from your solar energy source.

Just because you have chosen to make solar power your sole energy source, does not mean you are completely on your own power source. The electric company lines will be attached. All this means is you must be phoned in case of an emergency repair. The electric company will instruct you to turn your solar source off, to keep unwanted electric current from flowing into their energy source. If this link is not interrupted while service is being performed on the line. A lineman can be killed.

All in all solar power is the best known alternative with helping the global warming crisis. The heat is used up, unlike the heat that is given off from huge industrial power plants.
